What to do in Blacksburg, VA

Joseph Coupal - Monday, September 15, 2014

If you are new to your apartment in Blacksburg, VA and new to town, you are probably looking for some things to do. Here are some ideas:

Indoor Roller Skating

Great for burning off energy. Adventure World skating rink has a variety of themed skate nights with great music, team skating, skate lessons, laser tag, arcade games and a snack bar. Christiansburg, VA . Skating every weekend, too.

It's not fancy, the DJs are good and there are usually enough pros there during open sessions to emulate. Lessons available as well as pay as you go Zumba several times a week.

Indoor climbing gym

Crimper's Indoor Climbing Gym is a first class indoor climbing challenge for climbers of all levels from beginner to expert. Immaculately clean and constantly changing, their expert employees are always available with friendly advice. Climbing is not just for the young! Color-coded routes are clear for all ability levels.

From their website: "Crimper's has several types of climbing styles: a 70 ft. wide and 16 ft. high bouldering area equipped with 16 in. padded flooring; a 23 ft. top-rope section with 7 top-rope stations; and a 30 ft. lead climbing section we termed the Gravity Well."

Great for rainy days, sunny days or days where everyone wants to build a little camaraderie!

Tubing on the New River

Between Memorial Day and sometime in Sept, it doesn't get much better than spending a lazy day tubing on the beautiful New River in Blacksburg, VA. Tube rentals are available. Bring your own tube and hike back each time or pay for transport at New River Junction. On site camping also available, but reservations are highly recommended.

The Virginia Tech Duckpond

The Duckpond is a pretty pond on the Virginia Tech campus that is a nice place to walk around. It is a few hundred yards long and about 50 yards wide.

The Duckpond is located at the end of the Drillfield (the central lawn area of Virginia Tech's campus) opposite the War Memorial and its Pylons.

Downtown Blacksburg

Blacksburg is a college town, with more students than permanent residents. The heart of Downtown Blacksburg is Main Street, which features numerous bars, restaurants, and shops that cater to both the students and townspeople. The central business district is only about six blocks long, so it makes for an easy stroll if you want to check it out. It gets busiest during football weekends, when thousands of Virginia Tech alumni return to Blacksburg for Virginia Tech football games.

Walk Downtown

Do whatever. There is nowhere that is dangerous to go and nowhere is off limits or restricted and you will almost never run into construction! If you want to shop...shop, if you want to sit on the curb...or one of the plentiful benches and talk...do that. This is so free and relaxing. just forget about making plans and go downtown and chill for a while.
