Choosing Off Campus College Apartments

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 29, 2018

Foxridge apartments, Blacksburg, VAAlong with picking a major, one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your college career is where you’ll live. If you’re wondering how to choose college housing, following a short list of dos and don’ts will help you pick a place that meets your needs and feels like home.

How to Choose College Housing

Do: Look at Amenities

The amenities offered by an apartment are among the most important things to consider when figuring out how to choose college housing. While you might not need some amenities, having them can make living in an apartment a lot more fun. Make a list of things you’d like to have in an apartment or on the grounds of the apartment and keep that list in mind when you’re out looking at places.

Do: Consider the Location

The location of your housing is pretty important. If you have to go to class five days a week, and plan on socializing or studying on campus, at least to some degree, finding a spot that is near your school is critical. How far away your apartment should be depends on how you plan on commuting to school. If you’re going to bike, it helps to find a place that’s about a mile or so away. If you have a car, you can live a bit further away from school, but not too far, as you don’t want to have to wrestle with a lot of traffic as you go to and from class.

Do: Consider Your Personal Needs

One particularly essential tip when it comes to how to choose college housing is to think of your personal needs. If you have a pet, and want to bring that pet with you, you’ll need a place that’s pet-friendly. If you need furniture, you’ll want to find an apartment that offers furnished options, too.

Don’t: Follow the Crowd

In college, it’s easy to get swept up in a crowd or to go along with what other students want, even if they don’t line up with what you need. While it’s understandable that you’ll want to be flexible and try to find a place that meets everyone’s needs, don’t ignore your own needs in an attempt to please someone else. If a potential roommate wants to live somewhere that doesn’t appeal to you, it might be easiest to part ways and find someone else to live with.

Don’t: Feel Shy About Asking Questions

One of the best things to learn when learning how to choose college housing is to always ask questions. Go ahead and ask the landlord or leasing agent plenty of questions about the property, about your lease, and about what it’s like to live there. You want to know as much as you can about what’s on offer, what you’ll need to pay for, and what you’re responsible for, before you make a decision about housing.
