Now that it is 2016, you have probably made New Year’s resolutions about things you want to change. For many college students in our apartments in Blacksburg, VA, however, it’s a time to make resolutions about the upcoming spring semester.
And since college students are almost constantly studying for a quiz or exam, some of these resolutions revolve around breaking bad studying habits. Here are a few not-so-great study habits and some tips on how to resolve them for the upcoming semester.
Waiting until the last minute to study for a quiz or exam is probably one of the worst things you can do when it comes to taking exams, besides not studying at all. Many college students suffer from procrastination, even when they know it is a bad habit.
Stopping procrastination is a great New Year’s resolution for any college student to make. You can try to beat studying procrastination by making a study plan for each day (at least three days) before an exam. You can plan to study a certain amount of material each day to ensure you will have enough time to prepare for any test.
There can be many distractions when trying to study, including television, music, friends and roommates, and of course cell phones. Having these kinds of distractions surrounding you can double your study time since it makes it harder to focus.
It would be a smart New Year’s resolution for all college students to get rid of all distractions while studying. Almost every single college student has some type of distraction when trying to study for exams, which can negatively affect how they learn and memorize information.
Putting away your phone, turning off the television, or going to a quiet place when studying can improve your memorization skills and test scores for the New Year.
3. USING ONE STUDY STRATEGY
Knowing the most efficient way you personally take in information is very important when wanting to achieve high grades. Some college students only study using one method, which may not work well for them; however, using other untried methods may help achieve higher test scores.
This is also a great New Year’s resolution for students to have considering it may improve your grades. If you have only used flash cards for studying and normally earn a C on exams, you should try out other studying options like study groups with classmates, or even reading and answering questions from the course textbook.
These new approaches to studying could possibly work better and help you earn A’s.
4. GETTING ZERO REST THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM
Whether you are a procrastinator or a worrier, we have all stayed up way past our bedtimes studying for an exam, which can make anyone exhausted the next day. Some students believe this will benefit them by getting in extra hours of studying; however, this lack of sleep can backfire and ruin all the hours they have put into studying.
A lot of times students do worse on tests when they have a lack of sleep because their brain is not functioning as normal. Students can also over-study, and cause their brains to be overloaded with information and basically just tire out before even starting the exam.
It is important to get plenty of sleep and have your mind sharp before an exam rather than staying up all night cramming in every little possible thing. Many college students end up resorting to this and do poorly on exams because of it, which is why it is another bad study habit to break in 2016.
