If you live in an apartment in Blacksburg, VA then you will be pleased to know that Blacksburg and Floyd picked up accolades in a recent magazine poll.
Readers of Blue Ridge Country gave Blacksburg a gold award — or a second-place finish, behind a platinum award — in the categories of Best Medium Town and Best College Town in the Best of the Mountains poll in the magazine’s July/August issue. Floyd received a gold award in the Best Arts Town category.
Blacksburg tied for another gold award as Best Retirement Town, and Floyd tied for a gold in Friendliest Town.
In the Roanoke Valley, Roanoke took a gold in Best Big City and another for Best Revitalized Downtown.
Other New River Valley appearances in the poll, which is taken every five years, included platinum awards for the New River as Best Fishing Lake or River and as Best Canoeing River, and for the Cascades as Best Waterfall. The New River picked up a gold in Best Whitewater River, and the Cascades a gold for Best Swimming Hole.
Mabry Mill took a platinum award for Best Blue Ridge Parkway Stop, and Mountain Lake Lodge tied for a platinum in Best Birding Area.
Claytor Lake received a silver award for Best Fishing Lake or River.
Golds were won by the Pete Dye River Course for Best Golf Course, the Floyd Country Store for Best Country Store, and Giles County for Best Stretch of the Appalachian Trail. More gold awards went to the Cascades for Best Hike to Take the Dog Along, and Best Hiking Trail, Claytor Lake State Park for Best Campground, and the New River Trail State Park for Best Rail to Trail System.
The New River Trail tied for a gold in Best Biking Trail. Claytor Lake tied for a gold for Favorite State Park. Dixie Caverns took a silver for Best Caverns. Mountain Lake took a silver for Best Family Getaway.
New River Community College won a platinum award for Best Continuing Education Opportunities, while Virginia Tech was in a four-way tie for a gold award in the same category.
Other New River Valley awards included platinum awards for the Floyd Country Store as Best Place to Hear Mountain Music, for Floydfest as Best Festival, for the Inn at Riverbend in Pearisburg for Best Bed and Breakfast, for the Lyric Theatre in Blacksburg for Best Restored Theater, and for Long & Foster of the New River Valley for Best Real Estate Company. Blue Ridge Restaurant in Floyd tied for a platinum in Best Diner.
Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam welcomed the plaudits, which come on the heels of designation of the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford metropolitan area as one of the smartest localities in the country by the Lumosity online game company.
“Once again, Blacksburg’s special appeal is confirmed by regional and national opinion polls. Those of us who live here have known it all along,” Rordam wrote in an email.
